 Networks

1. Twisted Pair Cable

The most common form of wiring in data communication application is the twisted pair cable. These Twisted-pair cable is used for telephone communication and the most Ethernet networks. The below picture shows the Twisted pair cable.

Facts: Shielded Twisted pair has a grounded outer copper shield around the bundle of twisted pairs.
Fact : Unshielded Twisted pair cable are easier to work with less expensive that shielded cables.

2. Coaxial Cable

This type of cable consists of a solid wire core surrounded by one or more foil, each separated by some kind of plastic insulator. The inner core carries the signal, and the shield provides the ground. The coaxial has high electric properties and its suitable for high speed communication but it is less popular than twisted pair cable it is widely used but television signals. The below picture shows the Coaxial Cable.

Facts: A coaxial cable consists of center conductor and one outer conductor which is shield was like mesh type.

3. Optical Fiber

Optical fiber consists of thin glass fibers that can carry information at waves in the visible light spectrum and beyond. The typical optical fiber consists of very narrow strand of glass is called the core. Around the core is a concentric layer of glass called the cladding. Coating the cladding is protective coating consists of plastic, it is known as jacket or sheath. The below picture shows the Optical Fiber.

Facts: Fiber optic are Thinner.
Facts: Fiber optic are Lightweight.
Facts: Fiber optic are more secure.
Facts: Fiber optics uses light.

(i) Local Area networks (LANs)
(ii) Metropolitan Area Networks ( MANs)
(iii) Campus Area Networks (CANs)
(iv) Wide Area Networks (WANs)
(v) Personal Area Network (PAN)

(i) LAN

Small computer network confined to a small area of up to local 1 km is called Local Area Net.

(ii) MAN

A computer network spread over a larger area is called Metropolitan Area.

(iii) CAN

A network larger than a LAN but smaller than a MAN is called Campus Area Network.

(iv) WAN

A Wide Area Network is a network spreads over very wide area such as countries continents etc.

(v) PAN

When a small network is formed with personal devises such as computer, phone etc., it is called as a PAN.
